What To Wear: Valentine's Day

Your Valentine's Day plans could involve romance or quality time with your best girlfriends, but the what-to-wear struggle is real. Whether you're a traditionalist, seductress, or pragmatist, my guide to all things red has you covered, and best of all, everything is easy on the wallet...

The Romantic

For a ladylike effect with a bit of sex appeal, opt for ultra-feminine lace or ruffles and a tasteful flash of skin. The dress I'm wearing in these photos are a great example, with silk and ruffles adding feminine flare, while the high hemline on one side works like a high slit for surprising yet understated sexiness.

The Sexpot

For a hot date (or hot date night with your significant other!), there's nothing quite like unabashedly playing the seductress. Cutouts, plunging necklines, bodycon silhouettes, and minis are your friends. Just be sure to keep things in good taste. You know the rule: If you're showing a lot of skin in one area (eg. with a plunge or mini length), cover up elsewhere (knee-length or sleeves).

The Skeptic

If, like me, you regard Valentine's Day as something of a fabricated Hallmark holiday yet still want to get into the spirit, a low effort piece that offers good potential for re-wearability is your best choice. Opt for pieces you could incorporate into your existing wardrobe, like burgundy instead of bright red, or more casual knit dresses which day-to-day you could pair with tights and over-the-knee boots.

The Illusionist

If there's a body part you're less than thrilled with, you're not alone; the secret is basic distraction. Draw attention from your less favorite bits with interest elsewhere, and use details which flatter the parts you do like. Think cold shoulders and prints to distract, while draping, pleating, and ruching conceal.

The Statement Maker

If Valentine's Day is your runway and your MO is to not look like everybody else, the sky's the limit. Mesh, asymmetry, and cape-like details are your friends, but they're also just the beginning. Scroll below for badass options that highlight your individuality above all else.
