The second I saw this dress the first thing I thought (after "Oooh, plaid!") was that it's the perfect transitional piece. It can seamlessly be worn on the stubborn tail-of-Winter days, into and throughout Summer, then back into the chill of Fall.

When hunting down transitional pieces, I consider if it's something that works both when layered and on its own, and if it can be worn with both closed and open-toed shoes. In this case, this exact dress works very well layered with a turtleneck and a coat, but could totally be worn with sandals and a Summery tote. The color palette doesn't suggest cold or hot weather, and the print is timeless, Season-less, and therefore limitless; it could easily be worn all year round. And don't fret—transitional doesn't have to mean expensive (which I admit this particular Veronica Beard dress totally is). My other favorite transitional pieces of the moment (with much wallet-friendlier price tags) aren't only in plaid (HERE and HERE—there's also a fab jumpsuit option HERE), but also polka dot (HERE), striped (HERE), and even floral (HERE).
